Amid a barrage of hype, The Hunger Games delivers. Director Gary Ross takes a smart approach to adapting Suzanne Collins’ monster young-adult best seller. Jennifer Lawrence, in particular, anchors this futuristic and politicized elaboration with impressive gravity and presence. She shows Katniss to be a courageous heroine with real inner conflicts.
Theme
The Hunger Games is a story of teen survival and the power of hope. It is also a critique of a society that celebrates violence and ignorance. The solarmovie film’s protagonist Katniss Everdeen is a powerful symbol of a young woman who refuses to give up in the face of adversity and is willing to risk everything for her family’s well-being. The Hunger Games also explores the power of love, which can help a person rise above even the most horrific circumstances.

The movie’s opening sequence, with its echoes of reality television, encourages the audience to despise the callous regime that controls District 12. It then plunges into a world where the citizens are starving while watching kids kill each other on TV. Then, it introduces the characters of District 12 and their heroic leader, Katniss.
James Newton Howard’s music envelops the entire film in an impressive aura of sound. His ability to accentuate the tension in each scene with subtle musical gestures is unmatched by other composers. He can create a sense of urgency with low strings or evoke a sense of danger with a simple crescendo.
He also shows a remarkable agility with sparse compositions, such as the track “Reaping Day”. This piece is haunting and evokes a sense of fear in the audience. It is also used in the film to represent Katniss’s internal conflict when she watches Peeta being reaped.
Characters
The movie takes place in a future North America (called Panem) that’s been devastated by war. It’s now divided into 12 districts ruled by an all-powerful Capitol. Each year the Capitol selects a boy and girl — tributes — from each district to compete in a televised game of murder called the Hunger Games. It’s a terrifying spectacle that reminds the citizens of the Capitol who really holds power.

Jennifer Lawrence carries off Katniss Everdeen with a talismanic grace and a ferocity that is utterly convincing. Her character’s defiance and morality give the film its linchpin, as she weighs love, chaos, and contract.
There’s little of the heady sense of blood-scent that was present in the novel, but director Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit) is an old hand at capturing dramatic action and allowing it to define characters rather than obliterate them. His work here is reminiscent of classic satirical pictures, from Norman Jewison’s Rollerball to Sidney Lumet’s Network and Kinji Fukasaku’s Japanese nightmare Battle Royale.
The supporting cast includes Effie Trinket, the Capitol’s chaperone for Katniss and Peeta; Johanna Mason, a female tribute from District 7 who has a special ability to fake weakness; and Beetee Latier, a male tribute with a talent for explosives. Also in the mix is Haymitch Abernathy, a drunken former victor from District 12. He helps Katniss and Peeta to realize that their real enemy is the Capitol and not each other.
Plot
In a future North America (now called Panem) devastated by war, the Capitol randomly selects a boy and girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each of the twelve outlying districts to compete in a televised fight-to-the-death, the Hunger Games. When the name of Katniss Everdeen is drawn, she volunteers to take her sister’s place, teaming up with District 12’s fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Both undergo intense training under the guidance of their mentor Haymitch, but as the Games begin, both face brutal obstacles.

The film is a dark dystopian actioner with moving drama, suspense, and good acting from Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. The movie is well directed by Gary Ross, and it delivers the grit and thrills that fans of Suzanne Collins’ books crave. The movie also presents a thought-provoking depiction of the plight of all teenagers living in perilous times. Its storyline includes classic teen challenges: disappointment with adults, including her mother’s weakness and Haymitch’s drinking; the need to impress others and make alliances; and the pressure of competition.
The Hunger Games is a compelling, thought-provoking story that resonates with audiences of all ages. The film’s depiction of teens killing other teens will shock and disturb many viewers, but it serves its purpose: to create awareness about the adolescent culture of cruelty, envy, and group hate in modern society.
Acting
One of the key ingredients in this successful trilogy-the other two being Catching Fire and Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2-has been its strong cast. Jennifer Lawrence leads the way as Katniss, her powerful performance spanning every emotional arc possible for the character. She’s nurturing, bold, fearful, angry, desperate, and confused all at the same time, and the film is able to keep our attention because of her believable performances. The other lead actors are also up to the task: Donald Sutherland portrays despicable President Snow with calm incisive patience; and Julianne Moore is a force as District 12’s feisty leader, Alma Coin. Stanley Tucci delivers a scene-stealing turn as Caesar Flickerman; Elizabeth Banks is the lovably bitchy Effie Trinket; and Woody Harrelson is always entertaining as Haymitch, the salty mentor to Katniss and her fellow victors.
Director Gary Ross’s skill at balancing a coming-of-age saga, romance and broader concerns about violence used as entertainment makes the movie a compelling watch. Unfortunately, the aesthetically misguided decision to split Suzanne Collins’ final book into two films robs the film of much of its momentum and leaves us wanting more. Still, a slew of top-notch actors deliver the goods, including Viola Davis as a fun mashup of Annalise Keating and Ursula from the Sea Witch, and Peter Dinklage as Academy Dean Casca Highbottom.
