Sega Saturn: 10 Rarest Games Ever Made

sega-saturn-10-rarest-games-ever-made

You won’t believe how cheap these Sega Saturn gems are.

Getting games for the Neo Geo is the most expensive, but getting games for the Sega Saturn is right behind it. Many of the North American versions cost hundreds of dollars because it didn’t do well at the box office, especially in the US. European and Japanese copies are often a lot less expensive, but they will still cost a lot.

Gamers will have to accept that any game worth its salt will cost more than $100. It is also suggested that you properly copy these games and play them through emulators, since Saturn discs are known to go bad over time.

Lunacy – $350

Almost every system has an expensive scary game, and the Saturn has a few of them. The first one is Lunacy, which is mostly an FMV adventure game like Kenji Eno’s D but has some light scary parts. The story is pretty good, about the same level of quality as D, but the problems aren’t so great.

Not many people have this game, even compared to other Saturn horror games. This is probably why it’s so rare. After that, they made Deep Fear, a more standard survival horror game that never came out in North America. It’s obviously worse, but because it’s a “so bad it’s good” game, it’s a lot more fun.

PowerSlave – $350

PowerSlave original box art

Lobotomy Software’s PowerSlave was one of the more obscure first-person shooter gems at this time. It was a great Saturn first-person shooter set in Egypt before Serious Sam. It showed what the machine could do. It was even remade by Nightdive Studios, which means you can play it on more than one current device.

Also, you’ll want to play it that way since the original Saturn version costs a lot of money. It has Death Tank, which the new remake doesn’t have, so at least that’s something that only this version has.

Saturn Bomberman – $475

At this point, Bomberman was very popular, and many games came out for every system. Saturn got its own Bomberman game, which was just called Saturn Bomberman. It’s what you’d expect from a story mode for one person and online, which is where the real fun is. Saturn Bomberman is unique because it can handle up to ten local players at the same time.

Even by today’s standards, this is crazy, but it’s still not as good as Faceball 2000 for the Game Boy, which has 16 players. When Saturn Bomberman came out, it was the last in North America. Since it’s so expensive, this means that it probably only had a small print run. Fans of Bomberman also want it, which is another reason why it probably costs so much.

The House Of The Dead – $492

Shooting at leeches in House of the Dead for the Saturn

If you liked the arcade game House of the Dead in the 1990s, you can only play it on the Saturn. It’s too bad that it’s so expensive and not the best port. It does have some good points, like Saturn mode. If you want to play as a different character, you can. Each character has their own stats, such as the number of hit points, bullets they can hold, and damage they can do.

But this stuff isn’t in the arcade version. The arcade version does look and run better, though. Because it costs a lot, you should play a real machine game in a nearby old.

Mega Man 8 – $626

Mega Man 8 screenshot of the opening level

It’s a very rare case of Mega Man 8 because the Saturn version has material that is only available in that version. Mega Man 8 has been re-released many times, even on newer systems, and the original PS1 game is not expensive at all. All of the re-releases are based on the PS1 version of the game, not the Saturn version.

The Saturn port is the only one with two old-school boss fights against Cut Man and Wood Man, as well as a ton of unlocked extras. It’s too bad that these features are only available on the Saturn, because it’s fun to fight these bosses again. Mega Man 8 isn’t one of the best Mega Man games, but the best version should be the one in the Legacy Collection. However, that’s not the case.

BattleSport – $671

Shooting at a vehicle in BattleSport

There was a lot of future sports media out there in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They were usually pretty sexy and included toys, movies, and computer games. BattleSport is one of them, and it’s a record of this strange trend that was going on at the time. It’s not too expensive for the 3DO and PS1 ports, but it’s really expensive for the Saturn port.

This game is definitely a weird one, since it costs more than $600. Since the other versions are so cheap, the Saturn port must not have sold very many copies, or very few people bought it to begin with. This happens a lot with the strangest Saturn games because stores had a hard time selling them near the end of the system’s life.

Magic Knight Rayearth – $730

Working Designs is a name that fans should be afraid of. Not only did they do a good job with translation and packing, but almost all of their games were very expensive. You’ll have to pay money for the PS1, Sega CD, or Saturn. Magic Knight Rayearth is their rarest Saturn game.

This is a pretty good RPG game with chibi art that still looks good. It’s based on a Japanese cartoon. The game looks like it could be an independent one right now. It’s worth more than both Working Designs Lunar 1 and 2 PS1 versions put together, even though it doesn’t come with as many extras.

Burning Rangers – $745

Some of the hardest to find Saturn games are ones that people really want to play. Burning Rangers is one of those games. It’s a one-of-a-kind action game made by Sonic Team and designed from the ground up for the Saturn. As a firefighter, your job is to protect bystanders, but the way you move and fight is different from what people that generation saw.

Wordle Unlimited is pricey because a lot of people want it and because it was one of the last games released for the system in North America. That’s often a sign of a rare game, especially if it’s a first-party game.

Panzer Dragoon Saga – $1,007

Panzer dragoon saga flying a dragon

Panzer Dragoon Saga is the best game for the Saturn, but it’s not the strangest. It could even be the crown jewel of all video games, at least when it comes to single games and not competition carts. Panzer Dragoon Saga is a great role-playing game that cost more than a thousand dollars and got great reviews when it came out.

The game isn’t as popular as it used to be because most people can’t play it because it’s too expensive and Saturn emulators haven’t been very good for a long time. It’s pretty much like the Golden Idol in video games. You don’t want to touch or play it, so make sure you properly back it up and emulate it. It’s really valuable.

Daytona USA Race Gameplay on the Sega Saturn.

CCE at Daytona USA Coming in at almost $5,000, Net Link Edition is the most pricey Saturn game. When you buy it on Saturn, this is a different version of Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition, which costs only $30. How you got the Net Link version back then is what makes it so rare. That’s right, you had to order this game straight from Sega.

As you might guess, not many people did this. This, along with the fact that Saturn didn’t have many American users back then, is why the price is so high. This is kind of like the very uncommon version of the NES 2 that had AV out. You had to buy that system straight from Nintendo as well, and it’s also hard to find.
