Spanish Explorer Juan Ponce de Leon’s Arrival
In 1513, a Spanish explorer named Juan Ponce de Leon was the first European to reach Florida. He came back in 1521 with two ships, 200 men, and cows. They landed along the Southwest Florida coast, and Ponce de León let the cows roam free in the open land. But during an attack by the Calusa people, he got seriously hurt and later died in Cuba. He called the place La Florida, which means “the place of flowers.” The abandoned cows left by the Spaniards attracted settlers and became an important thing to sell.
